Design and build of tech-driven skin health analysis device.
The Challenge
Based in London, iiaa (the International Institute for Anti-Ageing) is a pioneering skin health brand leading the way with science, innovation and knowledge to transform how people feel in their skin.
GX Group was approached by the iiaa’s innovation team, and tasked with designing and building a revolutionary, tech-driven skin health analysis device. Centred around a powerful Sony camera that takes exceptionally detailed images, the device – the eventis – empowers skincare consultants with advanced insights to deliver tailor-made skincare solutions.
GX was briefed to produce a striking, curved, future-focussed design that could house both a computer and the camera. A further challenge – adding considerable complexity – was that the camera would need to move within the casing, as face profiling requires shots from three different angles.
The Solution
GX worked alongside iiaa’s in-house designer to refine the unit’s aesthetic, while our engineers focused on developing the internal systems. Mounting electronics inside a curved casing – and one that needs to move in multiple directions – demanded inventive solutions.
The development process required patience, close collaboration and extensive prototyping. With production volumes initially expected to be in the low hundreds, injection mould tooling was not viable. Instead, GX first used 3D printing to validate the functionality of key fixings, before investing in vacuum casting tooling to enable consistent, low-volume production runs.
Once a fully functional, beautifully designed solution was achieved, a short run of units was created and launched to test market interest.
The Result
Since the soft launch, feedback and uptake proved so positive that ambitions for the device quickly grew. Sony’s Innovation & Excellence Centre – located not far from GX in Pencoed – was brought in to prepare the designs for high volume production. Having provided significant knowledge and insight throughout, GX continues to play a key role in the decision-making process.
Soon, the eventis will signal the dawn of a new era in skincare health and consultancy worldwide.
