An online analytical toxicity machine using bioluminescent technology to monitor water contamination.
The Challenge
Modern Water first approached GX Product Design to develop an online analytical toxicity instrument using bioluminescent technology to monitor water contamination. Following the successful production several units were custom built by GX and exported to Asia. A subsequent request for more units, destined for the Far East, prompted GX Product Design to consider several enhancements to the product based on feedback.
The Solution
The premise behind the unit is to ensure a stable environment so that bioluminescent culture can monitor the amount of light emitted by the bacteria in constant samples of water. To cope with the extremes of heat experienced within Asia, the design team at GX incorporated an air conditioning unit into the enhanced units.
As a standalone instrument the Microtox CTM was designed with a simple colour touchscreen. This also allowed the unit to be controlled and monitored remotely or via the internet, providing real-time warning of water contamination.
The Result
The design engineers at GX Product Design have worked closely with Modern Water throughout this project to design the Microtox® CTM. GX’s initial design ensured the unit could be developed with low manufacturing costs which has added the unit’s appeal to worldwide markets. By harnessing life sciences and combining it with practical design, Modern Water and GX Product Design have raised the bar in online water toxicity testing with the first truly continuous real-time instrument.
