Celebrating British Science Week; helping inspire the next generation of UK innovators

4 March 2026

British Science Week celebrates science, technology, engineering and maths, and champions the ideas, innovations and people that help to shape our world.

As design engineers this mindset is central to the work we do every day at GX, not only for the commercial projects we work on, but also the support we provide for STEM learning in UK schools.

A standout example of this is our collaboration with Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult, where our design engineers contributed to the development of an educational device the ‘Pulse Oximeter’ for use in UK classrooms. A robust, hands‑on learning tool, the Pulse Oximeter allows students to explore electronics, medical technology, and real‑world engineering problem‑solving.

Supporting STEM education in UK schools

The UK faces an ongoing skills gap in engineering, making early engagement with students more crucial than ever. Engineering organisations are responding by creating outreach programmes that spark curiosity and encourage young people to consider STEM careers. CSA Catapult’s goal was to design a classroom resource that teachers could use to introduce students to semiconductors and electronics in an engaging, practical way. They turned to GX for help turning their concept into a robust, classroom‑ready solution.

The Pulse Oximeter is now used as a GCSE teaching aid, helping students understand cardiovascular functionality, semiconductor applications and how signal processing turns physical measurements into usable data. It also clearly demonstrates how engineering underpins healthcare which helps broaden the appeal of STEM to a more diverse range of students.

Why Projects Like This Matter

STEM outreach doesn’t just teach scientific principles, it helps students imagine themselves as future engineers, technologists, and innovators. The Pulse Oximeter project is a powerful example of how industry‑education collaborations can bring real engineering challenges into the classroom and help teachers deliver more impactful STEM lessons.

Celebrating British Science Week With Purpose

For GX, British Science Week is more than a celebration, it’s a reminder of the importance of investing in the next generation. Collaborations with partners like CSA Catapult allows GX design engineers to play a direct role in building the UK’s future STEM workforce.

If you’d like to promote STEM in your organisation, or are curious about how GX brings engineered ideas to life, we’d love to talk.
