Simon, GX’s Senior Mechanical and Mechatronics Design Engineer, reinforces how much the quality of the CAD model shapes the entire project, stating. “The quality of the 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and the specified GD&T in accordance with ISO-GPS standards form the foundation for the individual parts, sub-assemblies and overall assembly. Together, they define the design intent, dimensional requirements, and functional tolerances required for manufacturing, assembly, and inspection. Accurate digital definition also enables rapid prototyping, such as additive manufacturing, allowing components to be validated before production. This reduces the risk of design errors, enables early fit and function validation, minimizes rework, and helps prevent project delays while maintaining efficient development progress.”

CAD at GX
CAD sits at the heart of GX’s design process in the day-to-day. Projects typically begin with hand sketches, allowing ideas to be explored quickly and creatively. Once a direction is chosen, the team moves into CAD the 3D model is typically created first, and the engineering drawing is then generated from that model. In a Model-Based Definition (MBD) workflow, the 3D model itself can even become the authoritative source, allowing GD&T to be applied directly to the drawing.
