National Day of Motoring: A glimpse into the future of driving
24 July 2026In little over a quarter of a century, innovation in the automotive industry has moved us from a world of relative mechanical simplicity towards one of defined by digital sophistication.
National Day of Motoring is a UK and USA awareness day on Friday 24th July and serves as an opportunity to celebrate these innovations. But while it's important to recognise how far the automotive industry has come, it's equally exciting to consider where it's heading next.
One of the biggest shifts on the horizon is the rise of autonomous vehicles. As cars become increasingly intelligent, the role of the driver is evolving too. The challenge for designers is ensuring that interaction between people and technology remains clear, intuitive and safe.
This challenge was at the heart of EN-Gage, a concept developed by GX for US automotive supplier Visteon.
Designed as a fully functioning prototype, EN-Gage illustrated how effectively drivers could seamlessly transition between manual and autonomous driving modes. To make this transition instantly understandable, traditional dashboard dials physically moved aside when autonomous mode was activated, revealing a touchscreen display beneath. This wasn't simply a technical feature; it was a human-centred design solution intended to build driver confidence and clearly communicate the vehicle's status.
Bringing the concept to life required expertise across industrial design, mechanical engineering, electronics, optics and user interface design. The result was a sophisticated working prototype delivered in just six months, demonstrating how innovative ideas can quickly become tangible products.
As autonomous technology continues to develop, projects like EN-Gage offer a glimpse into the future of motoring – one where intelligent systems and intuitive design work together to create safer, more engaging driving experiences. We think that that’s exactly the kind of innovation worth shouting about this National Day of Motoring.
At GX, we're proud to help organisations turn ambitious ideas into reality. By combining technical expertise with practical design solutions, we’re helping to engineer the world of tomorrow. To find out more call +44 (0)1291 673437 or email us, and a member of our team will be in touch.
